Globally-Minded
We prepare students for a globalized world through cultural experiences, international travel opportunities, and language immersion in Mandarin and Spanish starting in Kindergarten.
What is a Charter School?
A charter school is a public, tuition‑free school that is open to all students and operated independently from a traditional school district. In Arizona, these schools are funded with public money, cannot charge tuition to Arizona residents, and must follow state academic standards while having more flexibility in how they teach.
Like other public options, they cannot teach a religious curriculum or discriminate or violate anyone's civil rights. What makes them different is their flexibility: they can offer unique programs, teaching styles, and school cultures that better match how different students learn.
At Tucson International Academy, we are a K‑12, tuition‑free public charter school in Tucson, Arizona, focused on college preparation and a global, multicultural education. Our mission is to help every student see college as a real, achievable goal and to give families a small‑school environment where every child is known and supported.
Why Choose a Charter School?
Choosing a charter school gives families many of the benefits of both public and private schools in one place.
- Tuition‑free and open to all students, with no admission exams or academic requirements.
- More autonomy than traditional public schools to design curriculum, schedules, and teaching methods that fit students' needs.
- Personalized attention, often with smaller class sizes and a clear educational focus, such as college prep or global studies.
Traditional public schools in Arizona must follow the state Education Code very closely, which means less flexibility to adapt to individual learning styles or pacing. Private schools often have more freedom, but their tuition can be too expensive and may not align with every family's beliefs.
That is why many families see a charter school as the "best of both worlds": the access and protections of a public school, with the innovation and tailored programs often associated with private schools.
